“I was only giving out the same advice I would have given my own daughter, for God’s sake!”
So says veteran radio host Kon Troversie, of Triple Triple FM in Dobim Dobim WA, after calls for his sacking by Feminist groups across Australia and the world.
Troversie (98) was reviewing the morning newspapers, as he has done for the last 70 years, when a story of a young Aussie woman who was eaten by a lion one night while walking across Africa came to his attention.
The woman had been warned not to venture into the area she chose to walk across, especially at night, but had done it anyway. “Why couldn’t she have been more careful, poor girl,” the Triple Triple FM star remarked. “I can’t help thinking of her poor family. What a waste.”
Within minutes feminist groups were calling for his immediate dismissal, and worse.
“How dare he blame the woman for what happened to her,” My Rights Right or Wrong, a Sydney-based feminist lobby group, texted to the radio station. “She has a right to walk anywhere she wants, at any time. Blaming the victim is the foundation of all male attempts at dominance over women.”
“Outrageous misogyny, typical of the continuing patriarchal approach to women’s rights,” a woman saying she was a member of the Lesbians for Women Trodden Underground, a pressure group based in North Korea. “He has no place on our airwaves. Sack him now. In fact, shoot him.”
Another text message read: “If women cannot walk where they want, when they want, as they want, then this whole fucked up world needs to be destroyed and rebuilt,. By women, for women.” It was signed by the San Francisco based Fuck Your Barbeque Sauce, an anarcha-feminist group that references the Biblical spare rib passage supposedly mentioned in the Book of Genesis*.
The Women’s Collective Who Asked for Your Common Sense? sent a sixty-nine page letter demanding that Kon Troversie be jailed for life and stripped of all assets, and the radio station be burned to the ground. “This the kind of filth women have been subjected to since the stone ages when men used sabre-tooth tigers and whatever else to impose their will on women. The only beasts we see in this sad tale are men.”
*Note: it has been suggested recently that the Adam’s rib translation is actually wrong and that the original words translated as half of Adam, emphasizing the equality of men and women. – ED
