“IF ONE MORE academic or author comes on YouTube and tells us how the world is about to end, I will scream!”

Mary, a mother of three, who runs her own business and cares for a chronically ill husband who still appreciates the joys in his life, asked that we not print her surname.

“I used to like YouTube documentaries and podcasts. But I have found recently, that they are beginning to suffer from the same disease all media eventually dies from: they cannot keep up with the demand they have created, and they are relying on the same small pool of contributors for their content. Eventually you get podcasters interviewing other podcasters, and then all of them interviewing the same small circle of authors and academics, who are only there to plug their careers and books. And, of course, the subject-matter of the discussion has to be more and more apocalyptic each time. No one wants to sell: Hey, we’ve never been richer, the world has hardly ever been more peaceful and compared to the Mongols even Putin and Hamas are pussies.

“Eventually, we will get what we fear. The prophesies will come to pass. We should bear that in mind.

“And if people really want to contemplate an apocalypse, they should think about what happened to the dinosaurs. Now that was really bad. For them anyway, because we did quite well out of it, didn’t we?”
