FROM OUR PET EDITOR, RICHARD GERBIL
COULD AN ILL-CONSIDERED remark about the consumption of domestic pets by immigrants be the deciding moment in the 2024 US Presidential Election?
Donald Trump’s claim that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating dogs has led to a huge demand for dog meat on the dark web, and consequently the price of domestic pets has begun to rise.
“If this continues,” says economist Will Spender, “the cost of cats and dogs will skyrocket, leading to an enormous growth in the wealth of your average American family. You’re looking at millionaire status for Joe Six Pack and his wife. Kinda like what happened to Tulips in Amsterdam in the Seventeenth Century. They key question is, cui bono? Who benefits? Does the current administration claim the prize; or does the praise gather around Donald Trump? It’s all to play for.”
