MELBOURNE
A NEW MUSEUM dedicated to the history of thongs in Australia is being planned for Sydney.
The exhibition, which is likely to be based in Bondi, will trace the cultural impact of the thong as footwear across the centuries, focusing on its rise from casual beach accessory to national icon.
“It’s hard to imagine Australia without the thong,” says Professor Norm Bruce-Blue, author of Thong – Down Under Feet, a brief history of the thong in Australia. “It’s become a totem to all we hold sacred. A defining feature of Australiana.”
The museum is hoping to be open from next year.
