FRESH ON THE heels of President Donald Trump’s successful appeal to FIFA, for Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card match suspension to be lifted so that he might play against Belgium, Germany is now said to be considering an appeal against Geoff Hurst’s controversial third goal in the famous 1966 World Cup Final between England and West Germany.

“If successful, the Germans may then argue that as the game essentially turned towards England on that goal – though Hurst scored another in the famous “they think it’s all over, it is now” moment – the whole match should be ideally replayed,” says Big Stan Gary-Malcolm, former Premiership footballer and occasional manager and podcast star. “They might even insist that Geoff Hurst, now in his eighties, play for England. And, of course, Weber, Overath and Held could play for Germany. After Trump’s intervention in this World Cup – even though Belgium did beat the Yanks anyway – anything is now possible with FIFA. Arguments over that third England goal at Wembley during extra time in ’66, and whether it did go over the line, could fill a whole stadium.”
